The Quiet Crisis of a World Without Insects

As we go about our daily lives, it’s easy to overlook the tiny creatures that surround us. We might not notice the fluttering insects on a summer evening or the splatters on our car windshields after a road trip. However, scientists are sounding the alarm: the world is facing an insect crisis of alarming proportions.

Studies in Canada and around the globe have documented a steep decline in insect populations over the past few decades. York University PhD student Hadil Elsayed’s research at Long Point National Wildlife Area and St. Williams Conservation Reserve in southern Ontario found that the total mass of insects collected had roughly halved since the 1990s. Similarly, a citizen-science project in the U.K. measured a significant drop in flying insects on license plates.

The consequences of this decline are far-reaching. Insects pollinate plants, break down dead matter, and serve as food for countless other species. Their loss could have devastating effects on ecosystems worldwide. As conservationist Andrew Whitehouse notes, “the extinction of rare species is often seen as a pressing issue, but the decline of common species may be more worrying: it’s probably the more common widespread abundant things that keep everything running.”

The reasons behind this crisis are complex and multifaceted. Habitat loss, invasive species, pesticides, pollutants, and climate change all contribute to the decline of insect populations. Researchers point to these pressures as major drivers of the problem.

One surprising indicator of this issue is the cleanliness of car windshields after a road trip. In England, Buglife’s citizen-science project found a 59% decline in flying insects between 2021 and 2025. This trend speaks to a larger reality: our world is becoming a quieter, more insect-poor place.

The impacts of this decline are already being felt by other species. The Birds Canada study published in June found that insect-eating swallows are becoming smaller and less numerous as their food source dwindles. Humans, too, rely on insects for pollination, pest control, and the health of our ecosystems.

But there is hope. Many cases have shown that insect populations can bounce back if people take action by planting native vegetation, preserving habitat, and reducing pesticide use. In Switzerland, a 90-year study found that beetles and butterflies began to decline sharply in the mid-20th century – but with concerted conservation efforts, their numbers started to recover.

The connection between humans and nature is often overlooked in discussions of conservation, but it’s precisely this bond that makes the decline of insect populations so heartbreaking. As Elsayed’s research and others show, this is not just an environmental issue; it’s also a human one. By losing insects, we’re losing a part of ourselves.

We need to take action – now. It won’t be easy, and it will require significant changes in our daily lives. But by working together, we can mitigate the effects of this crisis and give insects a chance to thrive once more. The fate of our planet’s ecosystems hangs in the balance; let us not ignore the quiet crisis unfolding before our eyes.
